Know Your Code

Know Your Code

Depending on which part of the United States you live in, you will have to build according to your cities codes and zoning. Regardless of what type of structure you are building, improperly following  code, and obtaining correct permits, can lead to fines, court visits and even tearing down all of your hard work. For your safety, and to avoid any altercations with your city, you should always follow code and your local zoning laws.

One great source for knowledge and reliable products, is Simpson Strong-Tie. Being a Leader in everything that is Deck and Porch construction, they know a thing or two about getting the job done right, done once. Jim Mailey from Simpson Strong-Tie does an exception job of talking about code in his Deck and Porch Framing presentation. You can download the PDF File here: Deck And Porch Footer Requirements.

Another great resource for researching local code, in regards to depth and width of pier footings, is the American Wood Council. The AWC can be an endless supply of information in regards to Code & Standards, Environmental Regulation, and topics like Advocacy and Public Policy.
